Diachronica turns a word into a readable origin story: where it came from, the cousins it kept across languages, and the centuries it crossed to reach modern English. Type a word and tap Trace.

Using the app

Search for an English word, or tap one of the suggested words. You'll get a definition, a plain narrative of its history, a Journey card (a map of where it travelled, a timeline of its forms, and a chart of its usage in English), and its cognates — each with a tap-through to the dataset it came from. Use the theme control to switch between Parchment, Scriptorium, and high contrast.

Frequently asked

A word returned no results.: Not every word has a traceable etymology in the sources yet. Try a related root or a more common form.
It says it can't reach the service.: Diachronica looks up words online. Check your connection and try again.
Is my searching private?: Yes — there's no account or tracking. See the privacy policy.
Where does the data come from?: Wiktionary plus scholarly datasets (WOLD, Lexibank / IE-CoR, ASJP, CLICS³, and more), each cited in the app. Full ledger at diachronica.com.
